Mary Dell Burnette, 85 of West Main Street, began her journey to heaven on Sept. 12, 2014 at 10 a.m.  She always did prefer mornings. Mrs. Burnette was born to Johnson Rogers and Ruth Page on Nov. 9, 1929 in Williamston. Her siblings included Edward Louis, Willie James and Marie Pearsall. Mary was formally known as Mary D. Rodgers and Mary D. Peele. She was affectionately known as: “Watt, “Plump,” and “Mary Dell.” Mary was preceded in death by her father, mother, sister, both brothers, a niece and several friends.  She leaves to celebrate and cherish her memory, children:  Kenneth (Kathy), Wenneth (Frankie), Dennis (Lillie), 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Mary attended E.J. Hayes School in it’s infancy. She participated in many school activities. No surprise that Home Economics was her most beneficial and enjoyed class.   Mary Dell enjoyed a variety of talents. She was handy in arts and crafts and had a eye for interior design. Her passion was sewing. She made many of the clothes for her children, especially her daughter. Her sewing skills allowed her to be employed as a sewing instructor for the Martin Action Center. She also worked many years for Oak Manufacturing and Jefferson Mill. What may have been her most rewarding work experience was when she worked with Milton and Della James. May Dell enjoyed watching game shows, soap operas and comedies. When she wasn’t doing these things she was reading her Bible. Her love for the Lord and Jesus made her transition peaceful. Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014 from 5-7 p.m. at Mercedes’ Funeral Mansion, Williamston. A funeral will be held Friday, Sept. 19, 2014 at 1 p.m., Back Swamp Church, 1414 Bear Grass Road, Williamston with Pastor Dennis L. Peele, her son, as officiator. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Mercedes’ Funeral Home.
